Lofty Ambition
Mesquite wood; epoxy resin; polyurethane finish
36" diameter; approximately 2-1/2" thick
The mesquite wood used in this piece came from a single tree in La Grange, Texas that was cut down to clear property.
Texas mesquite is one of the hardest woods in North America giving it a natural luster. The colors of the heartwood range from golden tan to deep reddish brown, while the sapwood appears as a lighter lemon color. Blues and grays can also be seen in areas of spalting, a term used to describe the common (and highly prized) wood discoloration caused by a fungus. While mesquite may be best known for the flavor it adds to BBQ and smoke meats, the gorgeous colors and figured grain patterns rival those of other common hardwoods.
‘Lofty Ambition’ was one of our first production-style pieces. Inspired by the natural limestone formations in a cave north of Austin, Texas, the carving was done free hand, meaning no pattern was used. Follow the intricate contours of this panel and imagine centuries of flowing water carving through limestone. We recommend using multiple light sources to help bring out the complex shapes and vibrant colors.
